More than 100 participants gathered on a hybrid meeting at DESY on 14-15 March to officially kick-off the new EU project RIANA. RIANA (standing for Research Infrastructure Access in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology) has officially been launched on 1 March to offer access to Europe’s leading facilities in nanoscience and nanotechnology that are at the heart of the development of new materials for prosperity and sustainability.

Laserlab-Europe organises a Training Course on Intense Lasers that will be held on 27-31 May 2024 at the PYLA-ALPHANOV Training Center in Talence (Bordeaux), France.
On 20 December, scientists from the Laserlab-Europe partners Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short-Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI, Berlin) and Helmholtz Institute Jena (HIJ) met together with colleagues from the Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA, Munich) in Berlin to foster the collaboration of laser institutes within the TANGO community. The agenda included hardware infrastructure, integration of existing software components, and control-system design.
From 28-29 November, the Laserlab-Europe Annual Meeting 2023 was held in Croatia. Hosted by CALT at the Institute of Physics, 35 participants came together in the beautiful city of Zagreb, to report on the recent activities and engage in fruitful discussions and exchange. 10 more partners joined the hybrid event online.
Good news for continued services to the Laserlab-Europe user community: The project proposal of Lasers4EU has been approved by the European Union. The successor of the Laserlab-Europe project will start 1 October 2024, ensuring that users can apply for transnational access projects on a large variety of scientific topics during the next five years.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 was awarded to Anne L’Huillier (LLC, Sweden), Pierre Agostini (Ohio State University, USA) and Ferenc Krausz (MPQ, Germany) for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.
Laserlab-Europe and the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI ERIC) have joined forces to analyse the current laser-based science landscape in Europe. The analysis aims to assess the European laser community to provide a better understanding of the services offered to users by Research Infrastructures (RIs) operating laser sources as well as the user needs and requirements.

The General Assembly of Laserlab-Europe AISBL, the international not-for-profit association representing 47 leading laser research infrastructures in 22 European countries, has elected John Collier, Director of the Central Laser Facility (CLF), an institution of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK, as its new Executive Director.
From 24-25 July 2023, the Laserlab-Europe community gathered in beautiful Riga, Latvia, for a Foresight Workshop to discuss promising technologies shaping the future of the laser cosmos. On the following day, the member representatives of the Laserlab-Europe association met for its General Assembly.
Valeria Istokskaia (ELI Beamlines) will report on a pioneering experiment exploiting proton-boron fusion in CH/BN targets to obtain high-energy alpha particle beams (up to 5 MeV) using a compact approach and a tabletop laser system with a peak power of ~10 GW, which can operate at high-repetition rate (up to 1 kHz).
With its innovative fast gated, ultra-high quantum efficiency single-photon sensor, the fastMOT project will enable deep body imaging with diffuse optics. Implemented in the new Multifunctional Optical Tomograph, the light sensor will achieve a 100x improvement of signal-to-noise ratio compared to using existing light sensors. The fastMOT project will receive a total of 3 million euro in funding: 2.49 million euro from the European Innovation Council programme and 525,000 Euro from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee.

The THRILL (Technology for High-Repetition-rate Intense Laser Laboratories) project received more than ten million euro of funding in the framework of the European Union’s HORIZON EUROPE program. The project aims at providing new designs and high-performance components for high-energy high-repetition-rate lasers, enabling the technical readiness level required to specify and build the needed devices. This work improves the performance, the energy efficiency and reliability in operation of such lasers at the partnering research institutions. Nine companies and research institutes coordinated by GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt participate in THRILL’s efforts.

Then now is your chance to apply for the 32nd Jyväskylä Summer School in Finland. From 7 August to 11 August, they offer courses in nanoscience for a maximum of 32 participants to study “Ultrafast Spectroscopy: Phenomena, Measurements and Data Analysis Methods”. Laserlab-Europe offers a limited number of travel grants for covering travel and accommodation costs. The deadline for applications is 30 April.
