Permanent call for applications for joint experiments
Laserlab-Europe invites scientists of consortium members to submit applications for joint experiments at Laserlab-Europe access facilities.
Objectives: Joint experiments help and encourage experiments jointly proposed and conducted by scientists from several Laserlab members. The objective is to reinforce the scientific collaboration between these Laserlab-Europe partners and to gather their expertise in order to carry out very ambitious research studies at the forefront of their scientific domain. An experiment may be performed at the most suitable facility or at several facilities with complementary contributions.
Note: Decision of the Laserlab-Europe General Assembly on 4-5 October 2017 (amendment of decision of 12 October 2016):The General Assembly decides that the maximum T&S reimbursement for any visit will be limited to 5000 €, and the level of T&S reimbursement for repeated visits by the same partner is reduced to 50%. |

Implementation:
- These experiments must not be confused with access provided for external users only. Nevertheless, the administrative procedures for submission and evaluation of the applications are managed by the same electronic system. Therefore, please apply as if you were an external user, but mark the field 'joint experiment' during the submission procedure.
- Laserlab scientists submit a proposal via the access proposal management system at https://laserlab.mbi-berlin.de/access/.
- The application form is provided at http://www.laserlab-europe.eu/transnational-access/transnational-access/how-to-apply-for-access/application-form.
- Details on the proposal submission and evaluation procedure may be found at http://www.laserlab-europe.eu/transnational-access/how-to-apply-for-access.
- After approval of a proposal, the T&S expenses of visiting scientists will be eligible to the Networking Activity WP4 - Scientific and Technological Exchanges. User fees, however, may not be claimed by the host lab.
- Following the joint experiment, a short report should be submitted to the Coordinator's office. The report form is provided at http://www.laserlab-europe.eu/transnational-access/transnational-access/how-to-apply-for-access/project-summary-report.
- Applications are possible at any time. Permanent call – no deadline!
- About five joint experiments will be carried out per year.
Criteria for evaluation:
Proposals will be evaluated by an external selection panel with regard to scientific excellence. Specific criteria are
- Originality and relevance
- Qualification of researchers
- Appropriateness of experimental approach, procedure and method
General guidelines:
Applications for Joint Experiments are eligible only if they are not related to research topics of JRAs in which both partners of the planned joint experiment participate. (In such a case, the visits can be made within the JRA.)
Please, note that there are two different networking activities for intra-consortium exchanges:
- Joint experiments, i.e. experiments with a clear scientific mission and possibly leading to publications, as addressed by the present call.
- Staff exchanges targeting technical training and exchange of know-how and best practices, for which calls are published annually with a fixed deadline.
