User Community Training: the Regional Baltic / Northern Europe Training School for Potential Users
 “Novel Applications of Lasers in Physics, Industry and Medicine”

April 22 – 25, 2010, Riga, Latvia

The Training School was organised as a part of the Integrated Initiative of European Laser Research Infrastructures II - LASERLAB-EUROPE and aimed at providing the information and involvement of potential users from the Baltic / Northern Europe region into the activities of this network.

The scientific directions of the Training School focused on laser applications in spectroscopy, technology and medicine, as well as the networking and cooperation opportunities of scientists within EU. The prominent speakers of the plenary sessions included Prof. W. Demtroeder, Prof. R. Field, Prof. S. Svanberg, Prof. K. Svanberg, Prof. J. Spīgulis, Prof. V. Sirutkaitis, Prof. R. Gadonas, Dr. D. Chorvat.

Young scientists also had an opportunity to benefit from the 6th International Student Conference on Developments in Optics and Communications (DOC) which took place in Riga on April 23 - 25, 2010. The event was attended by 86 participants from 6 countries.

  • "Photonics in medicine - detection and treatment of malignant tumours in men", Prof. K. Svanberg, Lund University Hospital, Sweden
  • "Applications of Lasers in Science and Technology", Prof. W. Demtroeder, the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany
  • "Laser technologies for skin assessment", Prof. J. Spīgulis, Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy, University of Latvia
  • "Multispectral imaging and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy: new tools for study of endogenous fluorescence in living cells and tissues", Dr.D. Chorvat, International Laser Center, Bratislava, Slovak Republic
