Vacancy for a doctoral student at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland

 University of Jyväskylä has a vacancy for a doctoral student starting on 1 August 2021 (or as agreed) in the Molecular Photochemistry and Photophysics Group at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), Finland. The position is fully funded for a maximum of 4 years. 

The project is aimed at addressing pertinent fundamental questions related to acidity, proton transfer and proton diffusion in organic media and photoactive proteins. The main goal of the project is to achieve a quantitative understanding of the influence of environment on the above phenomena. The research consists of experimental photochemistry and laser spectroscopy utilizing several advanced time-resolved spectroscopic techniques (femtosecond broadband fluorescence and transient absorption). The research will be carried out at the LaserLab-NSC ( The project may also involve the use computational chemistry tools depending on the background of applicant. Short-term research visits to the sites of our collaborators are to be expected. Nanoscience Center (NSC, offers state-of-the-art research facilities combining physics, chemistry and biology. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to develop their skills in a very interdisciplinary environment interacting frequently with biologists and computational and theoretical chemists. 


Required skills:
 *   A Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics or a related discipline
 *   Experience in experimental optical spectroscopy, photochemistry or photophysics
 *   Experience in programming (MatLab, Python) or computational chemistry is considered advantageous  
 *   Good oral and written English communication skills
