Postdoc and PhD positions in Ultrafast Chiral Spectroscopy at University of Basel, Switzerland

The newly established Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Chiral Molecular Dynamics Laboratory at University of Basel is looking for a postdoctoral researcher and a doctoral student to join our growing team.

The principal goal of our research is to capture and understand the molecular transformations that drive biological and chemical processes on the nanoscale. To achieve this, we develop innovative time-resolved spectroscopic tools that use broadband, polarization-controlled laser pulses to capture both electronic and structural changes in molecular systems on their natural time scales. More information can be found on our group’s website: https://oppermann.chemie.unibas.ch/en/

A short summary of the open Postdoc and PhD positions can be found below. Further details on the roles and their application requirements can be found under: https://oppermann.chemie.unibas.ch/en/group/open-positions/

Postdoc position: Advanced photonics for ultrafast chiral spectroscopy in the deep ultraviolet

We are looking for a highly motivated and pro-active postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in ultrafast spectroscopy. The candidate will develop new spectroscopy instrumentation based on state-of-the-art photonic technology with the aim to study the structural and electronic dynamics encoded in the deep ultraviolet chromophores of biological and chemical systems in solution. The project is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and a Royal Society International Exchange Grant.

The planned starting date is 1 September 2023 (can be adapted upon mutual agreement) and the initial duration of the position is 2 years.

PhD Position: Stereocontrolled charge-carrier dynamics in chiral metal nanoparticles

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative doctoral candidate with a background in ultrafast spectroscopy and/or research in photophysics & -chemistry to join our team. Based on our ultrafast chiral spectroscopy approach, this project will investigate the photo-induced charge carrier dynamics in a range of chiral metal nanoparticles with regards to their potential as photosensitizers in stereocontrolled photochemical processes. The project is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The planned starting date is 1 September 2023 (can be adapted upon mutual agreement).
