Laser Centre Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Description: At the Laser Centre, started in 1992
and located on the campus of the Vrije Universiteit in
Amsterdam, the laser-oriented research activities of several groups
from different disciplines in Physics,
Chemistry, and Biology are concentrated. The Laser Centre has a highly
qualified research and postdoctoral
training programme and an excellent infrastructure. In total about 100
local scientists, and a large numbers of
visitors perform laser-related research ranging from laser development
to application of laser radiation in
chemical analysis and reaction dynamics, linear and non-linear light
scattering, metrology, microscopy,
spectroscopy and cold atoms research. Increasingly the focus of our
research activities is directed towards
biophysics and biomedical photonics, including strong activities in
photosynthesis, medical imaging and
optical coherence tomography.
Excellence: The research at LCVU is at the
forefront of the international developments in laser-applied
research witnessed by over 100 publications in highly ranked
internationally reviewed journals per year.
Main tasks: Participant in networking activities,
infrastructure providing Access, and collaboration in the
JRA’s: ALADIN and OPTBIO.
Previous experience: LCVU has been partner in
LASERLAB EUROPE in FP-6, while it acquired
independently a European Access programme within FP5. Within these
programmes LCVU has hosted a
large number of projects, many of a small scale, hosting large numbers
of European scientists. LCVU
coordinated the Joint Research Activity 1 within LLE, and it has hosted
a Participants Council of LLE, an
LLE-Users meeting on "Chemical, Biological, and Medical Applications of
Laser Spectroscopy", and a
LASERNET-meeting on "New Frontiers in Laser Applications in Biology,
Chemistry and Medicine".
