Practical experimental training – Target Area Petawatt

Topics and format:

The CLF is organising a dedicated EU event based on our annual "Training Weeks" which have been run in the CLF for ~ 15 years. The course usually takes early PhD students and trains them in the practicalities of performing High Power Laser experiments. Students benefit from the experiences of the CLF staff and have an excellent opportunity to network with other members of the EU community and attend lectures by guest speakers – recent topics have included ion acceleration, electron acceleration, astrophysical phenomena and summaries of international facilities.

Session 1 (1 week) takes place within one of the facility target areas, setting up an experiment from 1st principles – defining target center, aligning beamlines, optimizing parabolas & lenses, building references and assembling, installing and aligning diagnostics and targets. The session brings together all the basic practices and finishes by firing shots to target and analyzing provisional data.

Session 2 (1 week) deals with other key skills required such as laser systems, diagnostics, vacuum and gas, safety systems, basic optical principles, diagnostics and an introduction to plasma physics codes.

>> Example of schedule

Attendees are split into 2 groups of 6 and undertake either session 1 or session 2 before switching over for the second week.

Participants:

12 participants (PhD, post-doc or scientist entering this research field) for 2 consecutive weeks

Application:

The school is free of charge. Financial support for accommodation and subsistence will be provided by Laserlab-Europe to selected students.

Applications for attendance should include
- progress of your PhD or post doc project, if applicable (in years)
- present research topic
- home institute and size of the group
- details of any upcoming experiments
- no. and details of any prior experiments

Please, send your application by email to by 15 September 2016.
