The Centre for Ultrafast Science and Biomedical Optics is a large facility in Italy within the field of lasers, optics and spectroscopy, located at the Department of Physics of Politecnico di Milano. Research is performed on ultrafast lasers, non-linear optics, high-intensity laser-matter interactions, ultrafast processes in quantum confined materials, non-invasive optical characterisation of biological tissues, broad band fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy and imaging of diffusive media.

Activities: Ultrashort light pulse generation and application to the study of ultrafast phenomena in the matter: it comprises the field of ultrashort pulse generation and study of ultrafast phenomena. The most recent research topics refers to coherent XUV radiation by high order harmonic generation, attosecond science, broad-band optical parametric amplifiers, device fabrication and materials, ultrafast spectroscopy and applications, femtosecond nano-optics Solid state lasers and photonic devices: it aims to development of solid-state lasers and integrated photonic devices for application to environmental monitoring, telecommunications and coherent control of light. In particular the topics addressed are waveguide and photonic devices, frequency-stabilized solid-state lasers for metrology and environmental monitoring, femtosecond laser micromachining of optical materials and periodic optical structures for coherent control of light; Photonics for health, food and cultural heritage:it is focussed on the applications of innovative photonic systems to interdisciplinary fields on the basis of the diagnostic potentialities offered by fluorescence lifetime imaging and spectroscopy and by time domain diffuse optical imaging and spectroscopy. These methodologies have been utilized in clinical applications for skin tumor imaging, optical mammography and brain functional imaging. Applications for internal fruit quality evaluations and monitoring of frescos and marble statues are also under current investigation
Research opportunities within the Laserlab access activity: CUSBO addresses a broad audience of users covering different research fields The main working stations provided by the infrastructure are:

All working stations are equipped with measurement setups: as, in particular, systems such as electron and ion spectrometers pump -probe, three pulse scattering, fluorescence up-conversion, fluorescence lifetime imaging, photon migration spectroscopy and imaging. To complement the offer to the users, working stations with more conventional laser systems are also available.
