Description: The Military University of Technology (MUT) (www.wat.edu.pl) is the largest university of its
kind in Poland and offers studies for all levels of university education: Bachelor, Master and Doctoral. In the
academic year 2007/2008 over 8000 students are studying at MUT, and they are educated by highly qualified
research and teaching staff, among which are over 150 professors and 350 doctors. The Institute of
Optoelectronics (IOE) (www.ioe.wat.edu.pl) is an interdisciplinary academic research institute with a
mission to support research and education in optoelectronics and lasers. The research staff of 130 including
70 scientists and 60 engineers and technicians pursues numerous research projects funded by the government
or industry.

Excellence: The Institute of Optoelectronics is a leading research institution on laser development and
application in Poland. The specific areas of research activities in the field include: laser optics and
electronics, new solid state lasers, laser systems, laser-matter interactions, laser cleaning, medical lasers,
laser nanotechnology, laser ranging and sensing, laser-driven X-ray and EUV sources and applications.

Main tasks: IOE takes part in the JRA SPHINX and is responsible for development of laser-driven X-ray
sources based on gas puff targets.

Previous experience: IOE was involved in several EU sponsored projects. The IOE team took part in joint
experiments on X-ray lasers at MPQ-Garching, Ecole Polytechnique-Palaiseau, MBI-Berlin, PALS-Prague,
FLASH-Hamburg.
