Description: ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences was founded as a national research centre of
excellence devoted to the study of the optical sciences. ICFO fills this long-standing gap with its mission to extend the limits of scientific and technological knowledge thereby supporting both frontier basic research
and applied research to cover a broad range of research areas. The center is engaged in both research,
education and training, is partner in the “Barcelona Masters in Photonics” program, and host to the
“TEKNON Masters in Photomedicine”. ICFO hosts 45 laboratories, a microstructuring facility, the CELLEX
Foundation Biomedical Photonics Lab and by 2012 will have expanded to about 300 researchers and 25
research groups.

Excellence: ICFO covers a broad range of topics from basic to applied research and applications in
Nonlinear Optics, Quantum Optics, Nanophotonics, and Biophotonics.
Main tasks: Coordinator of WP7-NA6 (Foresight Activities), participant in JRA’s ALADIN and OPTBIO,
participant in networking activities.

Previous experience: ICFO is the national node and partner in a variety of projects funded by the European
Union, such as SCALA, QAP, QUROPE, PLASMOCOM, ASPRINT, ATOM3D, BIO-LIGHT-TOUCH,
QGATES, EMALI, COCOS, PHOREMOST, PLASMO-NANO-DEVICES, XTRA, VINO, COST MP0603,
COST P14, BioPhotonics World, QOIT, EPIC, IPCA, Photonics 4 Life as well as coordinator of QQIT,
NanoLight and HOPE. National collaborations are very active, with ICFO being leader in three of the
national efforts funded by the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program, the most competitive program by the
Ministry of Education and Science of Spain, on the research side, in “Quantum Optical Information
Technology”, “NanoLight” and “Science and Application of Ultrafast, Ultra-intense Lasers (SAUUL)”, and,
on the industrial side, in the “European Technological Platform (Photonics XXI)”, the “European Photonics
Industry Consortium (EPIC)”, and the “International Photonics Commercialization Alliance (IPCA)”.
