University of Szeged, Department of Physics, Szeged, Hungary
Description: The University of Szeged consisting of
twelve faculties is the largest university of Hungaryoutside Budapest.
Department of Physics, part of the Faculty of Science and Informatics,
is the largest
photonics-related institution in Hungary, where studies on optics and
lasers including also their applications
started as early as in mid-seventies. The total number of staff at USZ
DP is close to one hundred, of which
around 40% is senior scientists and 20% PhD students. Besides the deep
theoretical and experimental
knowledge of laser physics and optics accumulated during the last four
decades in Szeged, the majority of
our publications nowadays are in the fields of laser matter
interactions in many forms (linear and nonlinear
propagation, surface processing, bio-medical applications, and
ionisation physics). The most important
research groups relevant to optics and lasers are the High Intensity
Laser Laboratory (HILL), the TeWaTi
Group, the Laser-Matter Interaction Group and the Ablation Group. USZ
DP hosts two high-power laser
systems (HILL at 248 nm and Tewati at 800 nm), which are the only high
intensity laser systems in Hungary.
Besides, a large number and high variety of diagnostic equipment
(time-of-flight spectrometer, mass
spectrometer, NMRI, atomic force microscope, scanning microscope,
electronmicroscope, profilometer)
along with their in house experts are available mostly at the
Departments and the Faculty.
Excellence: Research and development of ultrashort
pulse ultraviolet excimer lasers. Research with
ultrashort laser pulse propagation, focusing and diagnostics, plasma
physics, laser-material processing,
photoacoustic spectroscopy and bio-medical applications.
Main tasks: Infrastructure providing Access,
participation in JRA the HAPPIE, participation in ELI,
participation in networking activities.
Previous experience: USZ have been in active
bilateral cooperation with LASERLAB EUROPE members
such as FORTH, LLC, LOA, MBI, MPQ-Garching and PALS. USZ DP has also
participated in the FP6
MRTN XTRA and the NATO SfP Programme.
