Description: The Department of Physics at Politecnico has a long standing tradition in the field of laser
sources and time-domain spectroscopy. Presently, using the latest all solid state laser technology together
with most advanced optical techniques different research activities are performed: (i) ultrafast lasers; (ii)
non-linear optics; (iii) high intensity laser-matter interactions; (iv) ultrafast processes in quantum confined
materials; (v) photonics devices; (vi) optical communications; (vii) non-invasive optical characterisation of
biological tissues; (viii) broad band fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy and imaging of diffusing media.
CUSBO groups together all these activities and relies on the collaboration with the “Centre for Ultraintense
and Ultrafast Optical Science” (ULTRAS-INFM) and the “Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology”
(IFN), both belonging to the National Research Council (CNR).

Excellence: CUSBO provides state of the art laser sources capable of generating extremely short light pulses
(few optical cycles) widely tunable from the near-infrared up to the visible-UV in connection with a variety
of high resolution measurement techniques. This capability have been recently extended into the soft X-ray
region with attosecond pulse generation and into the development of state of the art instrumentation for noninvasive
optical characterisation of tissues in biomedicine.

Research Infrastructures” Contract HPRI-CT-2001-00148 (2001-March 2004); (ii) FP6 programme
“Integrated Infrastructure Initiative” LASERLAB - Contract number: RII3-CT-2003-506350 (2004-2007).
