Description: Formed by Royal Charter in 2007 the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one
of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting scientists and engineers world-wide.
The Council operates world-class, large scale research facilities and provides strategic advice to the UK
government on their development. It also manages international research projects in support of a broad crosssection
of the UK research community. The Council also directs, coordinates and funds research, education
and training. Of direct relevance to LASERLAB EUROPE, the Council operates and develops the Central
Laser Facility (CLF) located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). This houses two of the world’s
leading high power lasers, Vulcan and Gemini and a suite of state of the art advanced laser systems that form
the Astra and Lasers for Science Facility (LSF). Access is provided to all of these world leading capabilities
as part of LASERLAB EUROPE.

Excellence: Development of and research with high-power kJ class lasers, short-pulse and ultra-high
intensity lasers; experimental and theoretical plasma physics, bio-photonic science.

Main tasks: Provision of fully supported access to the Vulcan and Astra-Gemini high power lasers, including
theoretical and computational plasma physics support, and to the Astra/Lasers for Science Facility.
Participation in networking activities.

Previous experience: 30 years experience in the development, operation and exploitation of large scale laser
infrastructures for a diverse User community; Participation in many previous EC programmes under the 4th,
5th and 6th Frameworks; Co-ordinating the HiPER FP7 preparatory phase project; Co-ordination of one of the
two LASERLAB EUROPE Joint Research Activities (OTTER)
